Artist Statement

 

I suppose painting is ultimately autobiographical in that it is a record in time of a particular artist’s choices.  Interpretation, perspective, choice and intuition all seek a voice in my work.  Reconciled or un-reconciled dualities such as movement/stillness, defined/ambiguous, conceptual/narrative or representation/abstraction all become variables in the paintings.  My personal concerns and investigations about the environment and our historical situation become a layer as do stylistic approaches that filter through a tangible surface.

 

I think of the works as meditations on our particular place in history. I work to allow the paintings to slowly reveal themselves to the viewer, gaining clarity through active looking.

 

Artists that I admire and have influenced me include Goya, Cezanne, Matisse, Jasper Johns, Rauschenberg, Gerhard Richter, Terry Winters, David Salle and Peter Doig to name a few.
